Picnic Perfect with Nutrisystem
Picnic Perfect with Nutrisystem

With summer right around the corner, all those relaxing, seasonal picnics can’t be far behind! There’s no reason you can’t enjoy the fun, even if you’re trying to lose a few pounds. You can be right there in the heart of the party, celebrating with everyone else—you just have to be smart about it, and use the “system” to your advantage.

Here are some fresh tips for enjoying all those barbeques and summertime picnics NutriSystem style.

Go All-European

It doesn’t get better than this—hot dogs and hamburgers on the grill. So why not go ahead and heat your NutriSystem Turkey Hot Dog over the flames? And don’t forget to serve it with mustard and a grilled onion! Or, as far as burgers go, you can prepare your NutriSystem Hamburger as usual, and then put it on the grill for a minute —just long enough for it to get a little of that grilled flavor. It’s also great with a little fat-free Thousand Island dressing, a slice of tomato and lettuce. Add a slice of fat-free cheese, and you’ve got the perfect sandwich!

As for your buns, why not grab one that’s whole grain, and try spraying a little I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter on it, and grill it up, too!

Feeling Like Chicken?

For a different twist, don’t be afraid to take along one of the tasty Nutri System Chicken Breast patties to your next picnic. They’re great if there’s a grill on hand, and you don’t even need to keep them in a cooler prior to eating. Just throw them in your picnic basket and you’re good to go!

There’s nothing more delicious than fresh, grilled vegetables. So how about grilling your corn on the cob? You can have about half an ear as a carbohydrate serving, and maybe, instead of just salting it, try something creative—squeeze a little lime juice over it once it’s cooked, and then sprinkle it with a Mexican seasoning. Or mix up a little olive oil, lemon juice and garlic, and brush the mixture on the hot corn.

Not feeling corny? That’s okay. How about grilled asparagus? Before you go, just wash it and break off the tough ends, and put it in a long dish. Marinate it in some lemon juice and some lemon zest for about an hour before putting it on the grill. It’s fabulous!

Fancy Fruits

Fruit is a great addition to any picnic, and the perfect way to stay on track while enjoying the season’s festivities. You could enjoy your fruit serving by joining in the good, old-fashioned picnic fun of a carved watermelon (watch your portion size, though (1-1/4 cup) because it’s a higher-sugar fruit and not low-glycemic). Or how about something a little different—make fruit kebobs for grilling! Just skewer a cube of honeydew, another of cantaloupe, a small section of banana, and two cubes of pineapple to make an awesome fruit serving. Let them grill, turning frequently, until the fruit becomes slightly browned. You’ll love it!

Dessert Buffet

Just because you’re on program doesn’t mean you have
to miss out on the dessert front. Even if everyone else
at your barbeque is diving into the homemade goodies,
rest assured you’re staying right on track by taking
along one of your favorite NutriSystem
desserts or snacks. They’re perfectly portable, and
a great way to hang out with the gang, yet return home
with none of the guilt!

How to Reduce Blood Pressure Symptoms – Health

Blood pressure
Blood pressure monitor

Blood pressure (BP) is the pressure exerted on the arteries. Blood pressure can differ from person to person. When your blood pressure is measured it is expressed in two numbers such as 120/80. The figure on the top denotes the pressure when the heart is pumping blood and its muscle is contracted.

Wrong blood pressure (BP)

If your BP is measured as 140/90, then you are a patient of hypertension or high BP and therefore you need to reduce your blood pressure level. However, you should be aware that BP rises with age and so as you grow older you should keep a check on your BP and reduce blood pressure if it is above the normal BP level.

Reducing blood pressure to normal levels helps reduce the risk of serious health problems like heart or kidney disorders. You can reduce bl. pressure in several ways. Firstly, if you are overweight, you should aim to reduce your weight to within the guidelines for your height, body structure, and age. BMI, or Body Mass Index, is the best way to decide what is the ideal weight for you. This measure takes into account your height and weight.

However, don’t start a crash diet, as this can create further problems for your body. Reduce your weight slowly through eating a sensible diet and doing some form of exercise. Exercise will help you shift unwanted pounds and will also plays a positive role in reducing high BP. Try to incorporate exercise into your daily regime, start easily with walking and build up ton include more aerobic exercises.

To further reduce BP, reduce your intake of salty foods and avoid or cut down on alcohol. Including foods rich in calcium and potassium, as well as fish oils and magnesium can help reduce high BP.

You have to maintain a healthy lifestyle in order to control your BP. Some of the important and essential tips are following a healthy diet with low salt and sodium, maintaining healthy weight, and being active physically, limiting alcohol intake and putting a stop to smoking.

It is very important to keep your blood pressure level normal or reduce blood pressure if it rises because high BP can cause severe health problems and damage the body. One of the important revelations in regards to reducing BP is intake of sesame oil. Using sesame oil instead of other edible oil helps in reducing BP or lowering b. pressure. Sesame oil contains approximately 43 percent polyunsaturated fatty acids, which has an impact on the b. pressure and contributes to reducing BP

Although lifestyle changes helps in reducing blood pressure they are not usually enough. It is important to continue taking any medication prescribed by your doctor. Therefore, a healthy lifestyle along with medications can reduce BP.

If you are suffering with High Blood Pressure, you should first consult your primary care physician before taking other steps.

No Complications Using Hoodia Gordonii Reported

Hoodia Gordonii is good

Hoodia Gordonii
Hoodia Gordonii

Phytopharm just completed the first phase of its five phase clinical research program and has reportedly found no complications; using hoodia is apparently safe for reasonably healthy individuals. While no hoodia side affects have been reported, it is not recommended for use by pregnant or nursing women. Consumer Reports does not recommend it for anyone, but not because of any reported side effects. They do not recommend its use, because clinical research has not been completed at this time. Complications using hoodia on a long term basis may arise. Hoodia gordonii was eaten by the San people of southern Africa, but it was not a preferred food item. They did not eat it often.

There may be complications using hoodia gordonii combined with prescription or over-the-counter medications. This has not been studied. The safest way to use hoodia gordonii supplements is under a doctor’s supervision. That way if unexpected side effects arise, the doctor will be able to evaluate if they are hoodia side affects or something else.

Hoodia Side Affect

Complications using hoodia gordonii combined with other botanicals may arise. It is believed that Ephedra complications were caused by using it in combination with other stimulants, but this can not be proven without endangering human health. Many botanicals are natural stimulants and consumers should read labels carefully before buying a product. Unknown ingredients should be investigated before use. Any statements concerning the lack of known hoodia side affects applies only to 100% hoodia gordonii, not hoodia herb combinations. Unexpected side effects should be reported to one’s doctor along with ingredients of hoodia herb combination used.

Completion of the clinical research program by Phytopharm may provide more information, such as recommended dosages and drug interaction warnings. Sometimes, even after a new product is completely researched, new side effects show up. There could still be hoodia side affects. No one can say with complete certainty that there will not be complications using hoodia, only that none are expected.

Are You Buying African Hoodia?

Hoodia Gordonii
Hoodia Gordonii

Many people have heard about African Hoodia. News reporters have traveled to Africa to sample the plant. Pharmaceutical companies are currently working on a prescription medication which makes use of the South African hoodia gordonii plant. Many health supplement companies are marketing products which claim to contain African hoodia for use by dieters as natural appetite suppressants. While most of these companies are undoubtedly delivering reliable and high quality products, there have been reports which state that some of these products do not contain South African hoodia gordonii, at all. So, how can the consumer be sure that what he or she is buying is genuine?

About Hoodia Gordonii

Wild growth of South African hoodia gordonii is rare and protected from exportation by legislation. In order to legally export African hoodia gordonii, a manufacturer must have a CITES license. Legally exported African plant is grown on farms or plantations. A reputable supplement company should be willing to make their licenses available for inspection by consumers. In order to support claims that they are selling genuine South African h. gordonii, some companies display their CITES licenses and the chemical evaluations of their products. The wise consumer will read these reports carefully. Some companies appear to have documents that, upon close inspection, are questionable.

South African h, gordonii is a succulent that grows in clumps of upright stems. Some reporters have called it an ugly plant. Beauty is, however, in the eye of the beholder. After about five years the South African h. gordonii produces pale purple flowers. According to Phytopharm, a British pharmaceutical company holding the patent on the active molecule in African hoodia, it is around this same time that the plant reaches maturity and can be harvested. Phytopharm has invested millions of dollars researching the African h. plant’s potential as an appetite suppressant. Some critics of the health supplement industry are concerned that the active molecule may not be present in large enough quantities to have an effect on a person’s appetite. Supporters recount the South African h. plant’s historical use by natives. They were not able to isolate an active molecule. They reportedly ate the stems of the African hoodia gordonii in its natural form.

Dieters who have tried the appetite suppressants currently on the market report mixed reviews; as with most health supplements, African hoodia works for some people and not for others. No one is claiming that healthy diet and a reasonable exercise program are not important for weight loss. While South African h. gordonii may help to curb a person’s appetite, it will not magically melt the fat off of a person’s body. Consumers interested in trying African hoodia should buy from a reputable company that sells other health supplements, displays a CITES certification and/or chemical analysis, and offers a reasonable money-back guarantee if the product fails to produced desired results. click here

Coffee is one of the most popular beverages in the world. Rich in taste, with wonderful aroma and highly stimulating effect, it has become a staple of life. But is coffee really that good or is it so addictive? May be it is both.

You love to drink coffee. Many people found it relaxing, for others it’s the fuel that gets the blood flowing. Is coffee good or bad for you? It depends on who you ask.

Generally, you must drink coffee in moderation. A cup or two per day is not going to be bad. But as in all things, too much of something is not so good. If you drink a cup of coffee every hour it will definitely have an effect on you.

What are some of the bad things about coffee:

Coffee stains your teeth. We all know how coffee stained teeth look like. Yes you can by things to whiten your teeth, but is it really necessary to get so far. You could cut back a little on the brew instead.

It causes bad breath. The whiff of the breath of someone who has recently had a couple of cups of coffee is not something pleasant at all.

It raises stress levels. Too much coffee can raise anxiety levels, so you can become stressed out. Just think about it, have you ever notice how much you shake after having too much coffee?

It can raise the risk of heart attack. If coffee elevates the heart and blood pressure, then too much of it, is asking for troubles.

It can also cause stomach problems. Drinking too much coffee may result in problems for your stomach. The caffeine irritates the lining of the stomach.

Some of the good things about coffee:

Drinking C. before cardio exercise can increase the fat burning process.

It is a good social drink. People go to the coffee house to rest for a while and chat all the time. A cup once and while can’t hurt and it could be a reason to meet new interesting people.

In many cultures it is impolite to either start or finish a meal without having a cup of coffee. It is said that coffee helps wash down a meal, but no one is certain whether it is actually so, but what is for sure is that it really tastes good after a meal. outsourcing it

As with all things in life, if you feel you are over doing something you need to cut back on it. You need to do things in moderation. We all know that coffee tastes good, but if we go too far with it, we’ll be doing ourselves more harm than good. You just need to know that one or two cups per day isn’t going to do you any harm.

Alcohol Habits

Alcohol is very popular with consumption at mass levels. As a social facilitator and feel good drug it has become well-established part of human culture.

Alcohol HabitsHowever studies have shown that alcohol has many deleterious effects: lower performance, mental impairment, possibility of addiction, diabetes or liver disease – those seem to be good enough reasons for anybody to give up drinking once and for all. In terms of weight gaining alcohol has an effect which impacts the body composition. In its purest form, ethyl alcohol, with seven calories per gram, is an energy source that bumps up the total energy balance when consumed.

Alcohol also provides what nutritionists often refer to as empty calories – calories without nutrition. And what is worse it is the first fuel which our body uses, combined with proteins, carbohydrates and fats. In that way it postpones the fat-burning process and leads to grater fat storage.

Alcohol provides almost twice as many calories as carbohydrates and proteins

With seven calories per gram alcohol contains twice as many calories as proteins and carbohydrates, and only two calories less than fats, which provide nine per gram. You must remember also that calories in alcohol lack the nutrients beneficial for a healthy metabolism and will therefore fasten the excess body fat gaining.

Alcoholic drinks also contain calories from other sources. Whine and beer are rich in carbohydrates for example, while some cocktails contain fats. This is an addition to the overall caloric intake. Carbohydrates release insulin, which can fasten fat storage, while fats are directly stored in the fat reserves of our body.

Alcohol can damage the stomach, liver and kidneys

When taken to excess it can have an irritating effect on the lining of the stomach and gradually weaken the liver and kidneys. This can lead to some serious health problems. Any damage done to the stomach will lessen the rate and efficiency of the food digestion. And the liver, which processes toxins and breaks down fats for energy is crucial for maintaining a healthy body composition.

Alcohol lowers testosterone levels

When alcohol is consumed, it decreases testosterone which contributes for the fat burning process, and as an anabolic hormone for the gaining of lean muscle mass. Lower testosterone levels result in lower muscle gain and less muscle means lower metabolic rate, which will decrease the process of fat loss.

Alcohol increases appetite

According to many researches alcohol can increase appetite, thus making us to crave for more food. This means that it increases the possibility of much “bad” food to be consumed. Highly caloric alcohol combined with large fatty meal is not something you want for your weight loss and for your health.

So maintaining a reasonable health and enjoying few drinks once in a while would not be a problem. But for those of you who want to lose weight or increase athletic skills, the best advice is to totally abstain until weight loss and improved performance are achieved.

Health Benefits of Vegetarian Diet. Exploring the Pure Vegan Diet

Losing Weight with the Help of Vegetarian Diet

Vegetarian Diet
Vegetarian Diet

Contrary to the popular belief, a vegetarian diet can sufficiently address the basic needs and the calorie requirements of your body, by means of wiser food choices and regular consumption. Studies have shown a positive link between vegetarian eating and general health. In general, the health benefits of vegetarian diet include decreased possibility of developing heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels, Type 2 diabetes, and different types of cancer. Speaking of weight loss in particular, a vegetarian diet is believed to exert strong anti-obesity effect, because of its low-fat and low-calorie content.

Defining vegan diet:

By definition a vegan diet excludes all foods of animal origin including, dairy products, fish and any other type of meat, and eggs, and it is solely based on fruits, vegetables and other sorts of plants.

Types of vegetarian diets

Except the pure plant-based eating plan, vegetarian diets can be further categorized into these three types:

  1. Vegan diets – exclude meat, poultry, fish, eggs and dairy products.
  2. Lacto-vegetarian diets – exclude meat, fish, poultry and eggs, as well as foods that contain them, but allow dairy products, such as milk, cheese and yogurt.
  3. Lacto-ovo vegetarian diets – exclude meat, fish and poultry, but allow eggs and dairy products.

Vegetarian Diet Composition

Sources of Proteins: Good and rich protein sources are: beans, raw nuts, peas, and soy products (tofu, veggie burgers). Build meals around protein sources, which are also high in carbohydrates and naturally low in fat, such as: beans, lentils, and rice (preferably brown rice).

Calcium: Calcium in a vegetarian eating plan can be supplied from: fortified breakfast cereals and soy products (tofu, soy-based beverages), calcium-fortified orange juice, as well as green leafy vegetables (collard greens, mustard greens, turnip, bok choy).

Iron in a vegetarian diet: Spinach, beans, chard, blackstrap molasses, bulgar and dried fruits. The consumption of vitamin C is important for the body to absorb more iron. Good sources of vitamin C are oranges, grapefruits, kiwi and peppers.

Zinc sources: Zinc deficiency is one of the problems that vegetarians have to resolve. Such issues require various and carefully selected food choices to be made. High in zinc are: whole grains, seeds and nuts, germ, bran, legumes, tofu.

Vitamin B12: As most vegetables do not have sufficient quantities of Vitamin B12, an additional reliable sources are needed. It can be found in some fortified breakfast cereals and some multi vitamin supplements.

Disadvantages of Vegetarian Diet

Are there any limitations or drawbacks of vegetarian diet?

Nutritional deficiencies, is considered to be a certain disadvantage of a vegetarian diet. The main concerns are due to the low caloric content of food of vegetable nature, and some certain nutrients that are easily acquired through meat based food products. Many nutritionists stand upon the opinion that nutritional deficiencies may occur with a vegan diet, therefore additional food supplements of calcium and vitamin B12 are usually needed, on daily basis – to compensate for the lack of these nutrients.

On the other side, however, advocates of the vegetarian diet believe that if planned carefully, a vegan diet can meet all the recommendations for nutrients. The main aspect is to consume a variety of foods and the right amount of them, in order to satisfy the body calorie needs and requirements. For instance, nutrients that vegetarians may need to focus on (these are nutrients easily acquired through animal based food) include: protein, iron, calcium, zinc, and vitamin B12. Likewise, teens and pregnant and/or lactating women may need a specific nutritional plan, concentrated on the higher nutrient intake from each food group.

All in all, today, vegetarian diet is one of the most popular diets among fitness and nutrition enthusiasts – especially for weight loss programs. However, it requires a careful selection of the right vegetable food groups, at the right time of the day, to get sufficient amount of life-important vitamins and minerals. Similarly, in a weight-loss routine, food supplements may be allowed, if qualify as natural and plant based product – to enhance and speed up the overall slimming results.

However, the best diet of all is the balanced and varied eating. Health benefits of vegetarian diet and good weight loss results are usually expected, and achieved.

Teeth and Healthy Eating

How to Keep Healthy Teeth: Connections between Nutrition and Dental Health and Recovery

Teeth and Healthy Eating
Teeth and Healthy Eating

There is an old proverb that says: “A smile will gain you ten more years of life.” Written long ago, these words now ring more true than ever. The connections between oral health and overall health are being astoundingly established. The human body is well build and operating organic machine, which proper function relies highly on the balance, and the health condition of each of its “parts” and systems. The same goes for your teeth and the health maintenance of your mouth.

Diet and Oral Health

What is the connection between your teeth and healthy eating?

To prevent cavities and for good oral health maintenance, your eating habits – what your diet consist of, and how often you eat, are essential factors. Changes in the condition of your mouth are affected, when you eat certain foods. The bacteria that occupies your mouth, will produce acid that will harm your teeth. This bacteria breaks down sugars (or any organic material stucked between your teeth) from the foods you consume to acids, and these acids start to attack the teeth enamel, and commence the decay process. Your teeth are frequently exposed to the cycle of decay – each time you have your meal or snack in between. Therefore, to ensure health and comfort in your mouth, you need to make smart and proper food choices.

Healthy Foods and Drinks that Your Mouth Will Enjoy

The best healthy eating choices for your good mouth-health include cheese, chicken or other meats, raw nuts, and milk. Because of their high nutritional value and composition, these foods are thought to protect tooth enamel by providing the calcium and phosphorus needed to re-mineralize teeth (a natural process, when minerals are re-deposited in tooth enamel after being removed by acids).

Other food choices include firm/crunchy fruits like apples and pears, and vegetables. Because of their high water content, these foods possess the ability to dilute the effects of the sugars they contain, and stimulate the flow of saliva – which is a process that helps to protect against decay by washing away food particles and buffering acid. Acidic foods, such as citrus fruits, tomatoes, and lemons, should be eaten as part of a larger meal, in order to minimize the acid intake from them.

Poor food choices (also known as “junk” foods) include:
candy – such as lollipops, hard candies, mints. Also sweet temptations (especially for kids) like: cookies, cakes, pies, muffins, potato chips, pretzels, fried foods; also fruits like bananas, raisins, and other dried fruits. They contain large amounts of sugar and tend to stick to teeth, stimulating the function of bacteria. In addition, cough drops should be used only when necessary as they may also contribute to tooth-decay because they continuously coat the teeth with sugar.

Good beverage choices are water, milk, and unsweetened tea. If not exclude them completely, try to limit your consumption of drinks high in sugar, as well as fizzy drinks – including soft drinks, cola, lemonade, and coffee or tea with extra sugar added. Also, try to avoid sipping of sugar containing drinks – they are responsible for exposing your teeth to constant sugar and, respectively to decay-causing acids. Be careful with alcohol beverages – especially liqueurs, which are with high amount of added sugar.

Is Chewing Gum Good for Teeth?

Chewing sugarless gum is actually beneficial to your teeth and oral health as it helps dislodge food that falls among your teeth and also boosts saliva flow to neutralize harmful acids in the mouth. Gums containing the sugar substitute xylitol even can help to reduce cavities. However chewing gum may turn to be a problem, in case of jaw pain or similar issues concerning jaw conditions. Chewing a gum for limited time, until it loses its taste and useful properties, should not be a serious problem.

The Health Benefits of Green Tea

Green Tea for Health
Green Tea

As you may know, the benefits of green tea are numerous. Green tea is used by a lot of people to lose weight, improve the cardiovascular system, or as a preventative health measure. Studies show that people who drink GT enjoy a healthier, longer life.

The basic benefits of green tea may include:

  • Lowering cholesterol and LDL, the bad cholesterol
  • Increasing HDL, the good cholesterol
  • Reducing blood pressure
  • Lowering blood sugar
  • Acting as a blood thinner
  • Reducing the risk of cancers
  • Reducing the risk of a heart attack
  • Decreasing the risk of strokes
Decreasing the risk of developing arthritis
  • Protecting against Parkinson’s disease
  • Enhancing the immune system
  • Acting as an antiviral agent and antibacterial
  • Helping burn calories
  • Preventing dental caries and gum disease
  • Building strong bones
  • Boosting longevity

Increase Metabolism Naturally

A University of Geneva medical study showed that over a 24-hour period, green tea extract increases the metabolic rate by 4%. This increase in fat oxidation was higher than in subjects who used a placebo or caffeine. In addition, this stimulation of thermogenesis and fat oxidation by the green tea extract was not accompanied by an increase in heart rate. Thus, g. tea extract has a distinct advantage over stimulant diet drugs, which can have adverse cardiovascular effects, especially for obese individuals with hypertension and other cardiovascular complications.

Suppress Appetite Safely

Scientists at the University of Chicago have found that green tea caused rats to lose up to 21 percent of their body weight. Rats injected with a green tea extract lost their appetites and consumed up to 60 percent less food after seven days of daily injections. The lead scientist on the study explained that a person would have to drink green tea almost constantly to obtain these results.

Green Tea is the #1 source of polyphenols, chemical compounds found in fruits and vegetables. These extremely high levels of polyphenols deliver green tea’s unique results in several ways. Just one example is a subgroup of polyphenols, exclusive to tea, called catechins. EGCG, the most abundant and powerful of green tea’s 5 main catechins, is dubbed the ’super antioxidant’ because it is 200 times more powerful than the popular antioxidant vitamin E. This super anti-oxidant eliminates free radicals, the unstable molecules in the body that are the major cause of both aging and disease, which are continually attacking the body. Unfortunately, polyphenols have a quick half life of about 3 hours, thus the scientific reason behind researchers’ recommendation to drink green tea a minimum of 8 times a day.

So try green tea today to take advantage of what many people have already discovered and live a happier healthier life.
